This is potentially a somewhat long (read: gushy) post about an amazing experience that I was absolutely honored to be a part of in early February. My dear friend Ashleigh Wells and I met a few years back…. we’re both photographers and we immediately clicked (maybe it’s the redhead thing… I dunno!). It’s pretty cool when you find someone that you really “get” on many different levels. We both are super opinionated (again… redhead thing), but we agree on almost everything so it works! We don’t get to actually physically see each other as much as we’d like… life, kids, owning our own business’s, it all gets in the way. But thanks to modern technology we talk, debate, and support each other every single day. So of course, when she found out she was pregnant with her second daughter, I was crossing my fingers that out of the array of photographers she has available to her, she would pick me to document this time in her life. I was honored, humbled, elated when she asked me to tell this story and it’s been an amazing one to tell.
We started with her maternity images in October where we braved the cold and waded in freezing cold water (and her half naked!!!) to get the shots we were both envisioning. You can click here to see those!
And then she asked me to capture her birth story. I have shot a couple handfuls of births but every single one is unique, special and glued in my heart and mind forever. It is one of my photographic passions but due to time and childcare restraints, I just can’t do it as much as I’d like. But this one…. this one I was not going to miss. It started in December with threatening pre term labour and all sorts of dramatic goings-on, but didn’t end until February 5th when I got the call that Ash was about to be induced. It was a long day for everyone (my guess is that it was even longer for Ash) and in true fashion, ended quite dramatically. But Miss Lennon Rose finally arrived to the overwhelming love of her entire family. Sadly, I didn’t capture the actual birth (as I said, dramatic happenings made the delivery happen in the O.R. where I wasn’t permitted to go), but I think I still managed to capture the jist of the story… check out the video here:
But of course, as soon as Lennon was ready, we had her in the JK | Baby studio for a full newborn session of her own. Ash’s best friend is Hayley from Just Hatched Photography Props which is SUPER awesome for me because not only does Hayley outfit my entire studio with her gorgeous work but she also outfitted our entire session with Lennon! Little Miss Lennon (who isn’t actually that little… if I hadn’t witnessed it myself, I would swear she was a 3 months old!!!) put up quite the fight during our session. She did NOT want to cooperate for her Auntie Jill, but we were persistent, her big sister Ella was an absolute STAR and we got adorable images for them to keep always. Thank you Ash, Bryan and Ella for allowing me to be part of the last year of your life. It’s truly been my pleasure to capture it all in photographs and watch you grow in to a family of 4. Can’t wait to do it all again next year!! (hint, hint!!!)
