Well…. Charlie is still sooo sweet and what a little personality! I absolutely adored photographing him again and I can’t believe how much he looks like his newborn pictures!!

Sweet Sienna was no different. Such a doll… no fuss, no muss. Just content, happy, adorable Sienna!

And while I may be one of the only photographers in BC that specializes in babies and newborns, I’m definitely not the only photographer in BC that attempts newborn photography either as a one time thing or as a side gig to a wedding photography business, family & child business, etc. And as a whole, we all need to be aware that there is a trend that is sweeping the industry… one where photographers are attempting posing and images that may be unsafe for their tiny little subjects all for the benefit of their portfolio. These poses look unnatural and unattainable by a baby on it’s own, however when posed just right by a photographer, it can sometimes result in an image that is deemed the “it” pose of the moment.

I feel like in order to save feelings I may be skirting around the issue and as a result babbling… so I’m going to come out and say it… Well experienced photographers sometimes create images of babies posing in unrealistic positions through techniques in photoshop. The image isn’t real, nor did the baby do it himself. The photographer creates the images through help from 1, 2 and sometimes 3 people, combining multiple exposures and special techniques in photoshop. For the less experienced photographer seeing this new and exciting image, this fact may not be known. And as such, the new photographer attempts the pose and allows the baby to achieve it himself or attempts the shot without taking proper precautions, sometimes resulting in a dangerous situation for the baby.

It’s taboo to talk about… I suppose it’s not good manners to “bad mouth” one’s own peers. However, if even one new photographer reads this blog post and decides to be a little more careful at his/her next newborn session, I feel like it’s worth it. PLEASE, please go read this fantastic article by my dear friend and fellow newborn photographer, Stephanie Robin. And at our next session, let’s all take a minute to reflect on the real reason we’re there to get those adorable shots… not so we can improve upon our portfolio, or prove to our peers that we have what it takes, but so that we can capture these illusive and fleeting moments for the new mommy and daddy who may be too overwhelmed and too sleep deprived to remember the pout of her lips, or the curve of his ear, or the adorable dimple she had from the moment she was born. Let’s take a moment to remember that we are here to create beautiful images of our clients and their babies and no fancy tricks are needed. They will love those images of their baby whether they are hanging from a tree branch or whether they are lying wrapped up in a blanket in a cushy pillow, snoozing the morning away.

It’s Newborn Safety Week people! Let’s pass on the word!

First up, Isabel! You may remember her sweet face from her newborn session… such a little doll! It was so great to see her family again!

She is Jax and Neely’s cousin… sooooo love having families in the studio. Hope to see you all again very soon!

Not only am I a full time entrepreneur, trying to keep my head above water while running a business with no prior business knowledge, I’m also a wife and full time stay at home mommy to my two beautiful children, Ashleigh who’s 7 and Jake who’s 5. Over the past two years, I commuted both my children to school three (or more!) times a day, as well as all their extra curriculars, to the town next to us. We also had our house listed for the past year or so on and off, which required constant cleaning and organization (not easy for a house full of kiddos). And two months ago, just as the kids were being let out on summer holidays, we finally moved in to our dream house only to start the renovations. I can tell you that the last few years have been hectic to say the least. Ya know the feeling that you’re not quite doing any one thing to the BEST of your ability and that mainly you’re just doing EVERYTHING sorta average?

That was me.

But that is all coming to an end!!! We have now moved 3 mins walking distance from our kids’ school, they are now officially both in full time school, and here’s the best part…. wait for it…..

I hired a STUDIO MANAGER!!!!!!!

And not just any studio manager… no, no. This studio manager is a great friend of mind and an amazing photographer herself. I’ve known her for years now and I’m just so sure that you all are going to love her as much as I do. She has already started to fill the spot perfectly. It’s only day one and already I don’t know how I ever did this without her!

I am soooo happy to say that Shannon Stevenson will be joining me at Jillian Kirby | Baby!!!

For any of you that have followed me for the last couple years, you will remember when Shannon and I worked together at Lucy Lime Studios. That is where we came together and this is where we continue on our journey working our passion and loving what we do! For all of my new clients, I know that Shannon will give you the attention and understanding and every bit of service that I, myself, would. She will be corresponding with you over email, phone and meeting with you in the studio for print pick ups, etc. She will be regularly blogging and chatting on Facebook.

I am just so excited about this new step in JK Baby and I hope you are too! If any of you have any questions on how this will work, please feel free to give me a call or send me off an email. I would love to chat! Or if you just want to welcome Shannon to the team, feel free to send her a “Hello and Welcome” too!

But from me… Welcome Shannon. I am so happy to have you with me and I know this is going to be the start of something beautiful!

I have a ton of great local moms doing amazing things here in Vancouver and the Fraser Valley… I just don’t have the time to feature them (I’m having a hard enough time staying on top of my sneak peeks!!). But that’s all going to change…. stay tuned for an announcement coming soon!!!!

And now on to the first feature in a while, Julie Laursen of Little Monkey Store cloth diapering. I must admit I didn’t do this with my two little ones, but looking back, I certainly wish I had. And now, it’s just so readily available, cost effective and better for the environment. Well, let’s learn about Julie!

Isn’t she just the sweetest thing!? This little one was chatting away and not one bit shy… mark my words… she’ll be advanced!!

(Ok, I may think that about all my babies… and yes they are MY babies!!!) 

But let’s talk about little Mr. Wyatt for a minute. Wyatt is 4 weeks old… yes 4 WEEKS old!!! That’s a tough age because normally babies that age are a lot more aware of their surroundings to the point that they don’t want to be bugged while sleeping anymore and they DEFINITELY don’t want to be posed all cute. They usually just want to be left alone and as a result a newborn session can be quite trying for everyone involved, especially the little one.

I always explain that to my clients that come in with their babies over two weeks of age but Wyatt made me look like I was new to the scene! He slept the entire time and let me do whatever I pleased without so much as a peep!
